This clanmatch was a learning experience for all of us. Team Schooly D surprised us with their teamwork and skill. As a result of the success in our last two clanmatches we were confident, but in the end we made some minor and yet critical mistakes that cost us close games. As always the suspense before the match was felt by every player on both sides, TSD didn't know what they'd be up against, and neither did we.
During our first game we learned a very important lesson: Always, always know what the rules and settings are before you go into the game. We thought that we would be playing a four round game, it was first to three. We assumed that we'd have motion sensor enabled, we were wrong. We planned and practiced strategies for a sub-machine gun weapon start, we planned poorly. We anticipated for the normal round time, the rounds were longer and they clocked in at four minutes each.
The small amount of confusion caused by the unusual settings coupled with the inconsistency in Team Schooly D's point of attack left us unable to anticipate their moves with any sort of accuracy. They took our flag and ran, we stopped them half way. At that time Schooly D had already maneuvered behind our spawn point and began to pelt us with sniper and battle rifle fire while the rest of his team made a second assault from their base. Our planning proved disastrous because we had built habits based on erroneous settings. After six rounds, no points for the Winged Warriors, and two for Team Schooly D, they ended the match prematurely after mutual agreement.

The second game was on Beaver Creek with the official 2006 MLG CTF rules. Things didn't start out well for the Winged Warriors as we had a few miscommunications at the start that hurt us and gave Team Schooly D an advantage. We were able to overcome our mistakes and found ourselves tied at two points earlier than expected. Immediately after our second score Russell stole their flag and was running toward our base and what would have been a Winged Warriors victory. TSD quickly rallied to stop us with everything they had, they managed to stall us long enough and extract the flag out of our base for a Team Schooly D victory. After this game it was evident that we had foregone our plans in favor of our natural instincts, and that hurt us much more than anything that Team Schooly D did.

This was a close game in the first half, we took the lead and the advantage right from the start. Team Schooly D had to fight an uphill battle. TSD is very good at fighting uphill battles, and they eventually tied the Winged Warriors at approximately 25 points. From then on they began to pull the lead farther away, little by little. We pulled an all-out, multiple-front offensive to break their setup at the sniper tower. We were successful and eliminated all four TSD players with only one casualty. Even after our aggressive attack they retook the sniper tower and threw us into a confusion of awkward spawns. With the Winged Warriors unable to reorganize an effective attack Team Schooly D went on a deadly streak that brought our last hope of victory to an early and frustrating end.

1 Flag CTF on Zanzibar is usually our best game, but Team Schooly D played a very good, very belligerent stlye that thwarted our efforts. They scored on both of their attempts and managed to stop us from scoring. On our second offensive round we took the flag all the way to the beach, just feet from scoring when Schooly D arrived and sniped our flag carrier. Those two sniper shots gave his team enough time to arrive and put up an incredible fight that ended in an unproductive sudden death.

The Winged Warriors really wanted to earn a mark in the win category for the night and this was our last chance. We pondered why TSD chose one of the larger maps for a 4v4 game but that was their part of the deal (this game was a split choice, meaning that one team chose the gametype and the other chose the map). For the second Team Slayer game of the match the Winged Warriors found themselves in another really close game that was decided in the last thirty seconds. After fifteen minutes of sniping, defensive dig-ins, aggravated attacks, and ridiculous banshee whoring; Team Schooly D pulled slightly ahead. Time expired and the Winged Warriors were finally faced with their first loss of the 2006 season. If I had to choose one game that reflected the entire match, I would choose this one. We made some mistakes and came up short, we certainly had the opportunity to win, but because of our own errors we missed it and lost.

Team Schooly D beat us fairly. This was our first loss (in our 2006 multiple game clanmatches) and we came away with a plethora of things to work on. There were some really close games... but the truth is we lost all of them - close or not. That kind of defeat can destroy a team if they let it, or it can motivate them to improve. Defeat can be disheartening, but it can also give an unmatched resolve. These effects are dependant upon how a team handles defeat, especially when it stares you dead in the face. The Winged Warriors are not quitting, we are not giving up. We are going to continue to train in our continual effort to eliminate our mistakes and optimize our performance. We look to improvement as a means for growth and a vehicle to victory. We lost, but because we lost we have an opportunity to examine our play and to overcome our faulty instincts with superior planning and practice. We won't be the same team when we play our next clanmatch, you can count on it.
As far as Team Schooly D goes, they were excellent adversaries and great sports. I've been playing with a few of them and I've got nothing but good things to say about them. I know that both of our teams are looking forward to a future rematch.

Team Schooly D is the best clan that we've played against yet. They were started in June of 2005 when their founder Schooly D created the clan and began recruiting key HBO members. Now as a clan with 68 members (as of March 2006) they have a great mix of community and competitive spirit. With almost always a small group of players online, this is a clan of close knit and friendly players. Even with their large size they maintain a good competitive group composed of their most active and most skilled players. This is the group that we played against in clanmatch 04 and the group they use for their serious gaming.
