Winged Warriors vs. Halo 3 Junkies

Think where team glory most begins and ends and say their glory was they had played such men. Our longtime friends and foes, the Halo 3 Junkies, challenged us to a best of five clan match which we accepted with pride. It had been a long time since our last match with this respected clan and we prepared hard for their disciplined slaying.

Game I - Lowball on Blackout

It is common in a Lowball game for the final score to look far different than the actual game played. While being out slayed was definitely the opening theme, the Warriors held to classic Halo 2 methods and relied on fluid teamwork to stay in the game. What works for one team can work for another. The tipping point for the Junkies was a series of strong holds in Lift 1 that left a large enough gap that could not be overcome. The Junkies closed out the win strong, just like they started.

  • Winged Warriors - 10
  • Halo 3 Junkies - 50

Game II - Slayerball on Isolation

I believe this was the first time the Warriors had played Slayerball in a competitive match, but don't let that matter in your evaluation. The Junkies live off of slayer games and Slayerball is their holy grail. For those unfamiliar with this custom, two teams face-off with points for kills and points for seconds that the ball is held. So, if you get a lead and hold the ball you can basically hold up with it and play strong defense. I will give them credit this was as one sided as can still be called a "competitive match". The Warriors have always excelled with objective game types, because we can overlook personal safety for larger goals and it shows up in our wins. However, that also illustrates why we lost this match as well.

  • Winged Warriors - 329
  • Halo 3 Junkies - 580

Game II Stats

Game III - Multi Flag on Avalanche

Honestly, if this game had been set up so that there could be no ties we probably would have won. We were doing well controlling the pace, and we started with a strong push and were exacting our will on the map and vehicle control. Obviously, the Junkies were not newbies though; they adapted to our strategy and pulled out their own capture in the heat of our own attempt. The following drawn out stalemate resulted in the only tie of the match.

  • Winged Warriors - 1
  • Halo 3 Junkies - 1

Game IV - Team Snipers on The Pit

The Warriors started off with excellent cross-fire and point control on the Pit. Through a series of patient moments and strong team kills we established an early lead and you could hear the positivity return to the teams tone. We were in control of the lead and could ride it out with patience and death-watching. But something broke down, no one could figure out what happened. But slowly as if losing our grip on an icy ledge our lead slipped and slipped until the end when we were on our backs again. This game, out of all of them makes the least sense, and deserves serious study to understand how it slipped away, because we were out sniping and out playing them in the beginning.

  • Winged Warriors - 75
  • Halo 3 Junkies - 100

Game IV Stats

Game V - Multi Flag on Standoff

This game was the courtesy fifth game. The Junkies had already won and the Warriors were demoralized for the moment so sheer vengeance drove our play. Anyone who has played in serious clan play knows that vengeance usually results in sloppy deaths and lucky kills. Surprisingly our kills were fairly good, which is what makes the loss even more frustrating. We are a good objective team and yet let the Junkies drag the flag from our right flank tunnel three times...there is no excuse for that. Everyone except our newest recruits should have known exactly what to do and stop it and we failed to, a telling testament of our emotional state by the end of this match.

  • Winged Warriors - 1
  • Halo 3 Junkies - 3

Game V Stats

Summary

In summary, our expectations were proven correct by the exceptional slaying of the Halo 3 Junkies. Our hats go off to them, they were always good sports and honorable, even offering to have DoubleCross2 drop out and rejoin so his host shot wouldn't be as overpowering. We thank them for the attempt and we look forward to our future rematches where the Warriors will bring a much better game.
